What was the one piece of information you wished you had, but didn’t, when you first tested positive for HIV?

Comments

  • Regularly test all inmates and staff for HIV infection, and put everyone who is HIV-positive on antivirals regardless of their CD4 count. This will lower their viral loads and make it more diffi cult to transmit HIV infection.
  • The best way to reduce the transmission rate anywhere is to remove the stigma that causes misinformation and lying about one’s status.
  • Needle exchange, safer tattooing practices, and easier access to condoms and bleach.
  • Allow the distribution of condoms regardless of rules about contraband or the perception that this may be promoting criminal acts (sex) between the prisoners. If nothing else has worked, maybe we should try something different to get the result so desperately needed.
